Your internet speed test says everything is fine. Your video calls still stutter every afternoon. If your home network seems to fall apart specifically during the workday and then behaves perfectly at 8pm, the problem usually isn't your internet plan — it's competition, congestion, or interference. Here's how to tell which one you're dealing with.

Step 1: Confirm It's Actually Your Network

Before changing anything, establish where the problem lives. Run a speed test at three different times: early morning, mid-afternoon, and late evening. Write down the results.

  • If speeds drop only in the afternoon and recover at night, you're likely dealing with local congestion — either inside your home or in your neighbourhood.
  • If speeds are consistent but calls still stutter, raw bandwidth isn't your problem. Jump to the latency and interference sections below.

This distinction matters, because "slow internet" and "unstable internet" have completely different causes. A call can fail badly on a 300 Mbps connection if the latency is unstable, while a rock-solid 25 Mbps connection handles video calls without complaint.

Step 2: Check What Else Is Using Your Connection

The most common cause is the simplest: something else in the house is saturating the upload channel. Video calls need surprisingly little download bandwidth but are unusually sensitive to upload congestion, and most home connections have far less upload capacity than download.

Common afternoon culprits:

  • Cloud backup software kicking off on a schedule
  • Operating system or game updates downloading in the background
  • Someone else in the house streaming video or on their own calls
  • Security cameras uploading footage continuously
  • A phone syncing photos to cloud storage over WiFi

What to do: Most routers have a "connected devices" or "traffic" view in their admin page that shows current usage per device. Check it while the problem is happening, not afterwards — that's the only way to catch a scheduled task in the act.

If you find a repeat offender, reschedule it rather than disabling it. Backups and updates should run overnight, not at 2pm.

Step 3: Rule Out WiFi Interference

If bandwidth isn't the issue, interference probably is. This is especially common in apartment buildings and dense neighbourhoods where dozens of networks overlap.

The 2.4GHz problem: The 2.4GHz band travels further through walls but is extremely crowded. It's shared with cordless phones, baby monitors, some smart home devices, Bluetooth peripherals, and — genuinely — microwave ovens. If your calls degrade at lunchtime specifically, a microwave two metres from your router is a real and frequently overlooked cause.

The fix: Connect your work computer to the 5GHz band if your router broadcasts one. It has shorter range but far less congestion and much higher throughput. If your router combines both bands under one network name, you can often split them into separate names in the router settings so you can choose deliberately.

Channel congestion: Most routers default to automatic channel selection but only re-evaluate on reboot. If you've never restarted your router, it may be sitting on a channel that was clear two years ago and is now crowded. A simple restart lets it pick again.

Step 4: Fix Your Physical Setup

Signal strength issues are boringly common and easy to fix:

  • Distance and walls. Every wall between you and the router costs signal, and brick, concrete, plaster, and metal cost far more than drywall. Two internal walls is roughly the practical limit for reliable call quality on WiFi.
  • Router placement. Routers belong out in the open, elevated, and central. Inside a cabinet, behind a TV, or on the floor in a corner are all meaningfully worse.
  • Your own body. Sitting directly between your laptop and the router genuinely attenuates the signal — water absorbs 2.4GHz well. It sounds absurd, but repositioning by a metre sometimes fixes marginal cases.

Step 5: The Fix That Solves Most Cases — Use a Cable

If your work setup is in a fixed location, run an ethernet cable. This single change eliminates interference, congestion on the wireless band, and signal strength issues in one step, and it's the reason IT teams recommend it constantly.

A long flat ethernet cable can be run along a baseboard and tucked under a doorway without any modification to the room. For renters or anyone who can't run cable, a powerline adapter kit — which sends network traffic through your home's electrical wiring — is a reasonable middle ground, though performance varies significantly depending on how your circuits are wired.

If you're on a laptop without an ethernet port, a USB-C or USB-A ethernet adapter costs very little and works without any configuration on every major operating system.

Step 6: When It's Not Your Problem At All

If you've ruled out everything above and slowdowns still happen at consistent times daily, the congestion may be upstream at your ISP — shared neighbourhood capacity being oversubscribed during peak hours. Evidence for this: speed tests are slow at the same times every single day regardless of what's happening in your house, and a wired connection doesn't help.

Document your speed tests with timestamps and contact your ISP with the data. A specific pattern is far harder to dismiss than "my internet feels slow."
