There's a particular kind of frustration in running a speed test that shows 200 Mbps and then immediately freezing mid-sentence on a call. The disconnect happens because speed tests measure the one thing video calls care least about. Here's what actually determines call quality, and how to fix each factor.

Why Download Speed Isn't the Metric That Matters

A video call is a two-way stream. You're receiving other people's video — that's download — but you're also continuously sending your own, which is upload. Most home internet plans are heavily asymmetric, offering enormous download capacity and a small fraction of that for upload.

A typical HD video call needs only a few megabits per second in each direction. The problem is that your upload channel is much smaller to begin with, so it saturates far more easily. When it does, your outgoing video degrades and stutters — which the other participants see, but you often don't.

This is why "it's fine on my end" happens so often. If nobody has told you your video is freezing, ask directly. You may be troubleshooting the wrong direction entirely.

The Three Metrics That Actually Matter

Latency (ping): How long a packet takes to make the round trip. Under about 100ms feels natural in conversation. Above roughly 200ms, people start talking over each other because the natural pause-and-respond rhythm breaks down.

Jitter: The variation in latency. This is the real villain in choppy calls. A consistent 80ms delay is completely fine; a delay bouncing between 20ms and 200ms produces exactly the stuttering, robotic audio everyone recognises. Jitter is what wireless interference and network congestion produce.

Packet loss: Data that never arrives. Video calls tolerate small amounts by interpolating, which is why you sometimes see a smeared or blocky frame. Above a few percent, audio starts dropping syllables.

Most standard speed tests report none of these well. Look for a test that specifically reports jitter and packet loss alongside throughput — the difference in diagnostic value is substantial.

Fix 1: Stop Competing With Yourself

Before blaming the network, close what's competing for upload:

  • Cloud sync clients (photo, file, and backup sync all upload continuously)
  • Other browser tabs streaming video
  • Software updates running in the background
  • Additional devices on the same connection doing any of the above

On a call that matters, quitting sync clients for the duration is a reasonable habit and costs nothing.

Fix 2: Reduce the Load Your Computer Is Carrying

Choppy video isn't always a network problem. Video encoding is computationally expensive, and if your processor is already saturated, frames get dropped before they ever reach the network.

Signs it's your computer rather than your connection:

  • The laptop fan is running hard during calls
  • Your video is choppy but audio is fine
  • Screen sharing makes it dramatically worse
  • Everything else on the machine feels sluggish during the call

Fixes:

  • Close applications you aren't using, particularly browsers with many tabs open
  • Turn off background blur and virtual backgrounds — these are among the most processor-intensive features in any video conferencing app, and disabling them is often an instant fix on older hardware
  • Turn off HD video sending in your app's video settings
  • Use the desktop application rather than the browser version where possible; browser-based calling generally carries more overhead
  • Make sure the laptop isn't in a battery-saver power mode, which throttles the processor

Fix 3: Get Off Wireless for Important Calls

Wireless is the single largest source of jitter in home setups. Interference from neighbouring networks, other devices, and physical obstructions produces exactly the variable latency that breaks calls.

An ethernet cable eliminates this category of problem entirely. If you take calls from a fixed desk, this is the highest-value change available to you, and it's usually a fifteen-dollar fix.

If wired isn't possible, prefer the 5GHz band, sit closer to the router, and reduce the number of walls in between.

Fix 4: Audio Problems Specifically

Audio issues have their own distinct causes:

Echo almost always means someone's microphone is picking up their own speakers. The fix is headphones — for whoever is causing it, which may not be you. If echo appears only when one specific person joins, it's theirs.

Robotic or underwater audio is packet loss or jitter. Work through the network fixes above.

Microphone not detected is usually the app selecting the wrong input device, particularly after plugging in a headset mid-call. Check the audio device selection in the app's settings rather than assuming hardware failure.

Very quiet audio often comes from the app's automatic gain control fighting with your operating system's own microphone level. Set the system microphone level to around 75% and let the app adjust from there, rather than maxing both.

Fix 5: Lower the Quality Deliberately

This feels like giving up, but it's genuinely the correct move on a constrained connection. Turning your camera off during a large meeting frees your upload channel entirely and makes your audio dramatically more reliable. Audio clarity matters far more to the meeting than seeing your face does.

Most conferencing apps also have a bandwidth or video quality setting that can be capped manually. Setting it lower proactively is better than letting the app discover your limits mid-sentence.

A Practical Pre-Call Routine

For calls that matter — interviews, client meetings, presentations — five minutes beforehand:

  1. Plug into ethernet if available
  2. Quit sync clients and unused applications
  3. Turn off virtual backgrounds and blur
  4. Plug in power, and confirm you're not in battery saver
  5. Test camera and microphone in the app's settings, not in the meeting
  6. Have a phone dial-in number ready as a fallback

If your laptop is managed by your employer, some of these settings may be locked by policy. Check with your IT team before making changes.
